I love my cat, Loki, but I don’t love having the litter box out in plain sight—especially in my kitchen. When I moved into my house, there wasn’t a good place to put it, so it sat awkwardly in a corner, no matter how much I tried to tuck it away.
Then, inspiration struck! I had an empty corner nook in my kitchen, and I realized it was the perfect spot for a DIY cat litter box hideaway. By transforming a cabinet, I could create a stylish and functional solution that not only concealed the litter box but also provided extra counter space.
Finding the Perfect Cabinet for a DIY Cat Litter Box Hideaway
I started my search for the perfect cabinet and finally found one I loved—an older piece with a porcelain top. It needed a little TLC, but at only $25, it was a steal! The paint had yellowed, the hardware was outdated plastic, and a few of the castors were broken, but I knew I could bring it back to life.
Transforming the Cabinet
To turn this old cabinet into a hidden cat litter box, here’s what I did:
- Removed the drawers – I needed an open space inside to fit the litter box, so I removed the drawers and saved the drawer fronts.
- Created a cat entrance – I cut a hole in the side of the cabinet large enough for Loki to comfortably walk through and framed it with trim for a polished look.
- Reattached the drawer fronts – Instead of leaving empty gaps, I glued the drawer fronts directly to the cabinet for a seamless appearance.
- Replaced the hardware – I removed the old plastic handles, filled the holes, and glued on new oil-rubbed bronze cabinet pulls to give it a modern touch.
- Repainted the cabinet – I used Antique White semi-gloss paint for a fresh, clean finish that’s easy to wipe down—perfect for a kitchen setting.
- Added finishing touches – I replaced the broken castors with felt feet for stability and installed a hook inside the cabinet door to hold the litter scoop.

Practical Additions for a Cleaner Space
To help reduce tracked litter, I added a litter mat inside the cabinet. The texture helps catch litter from Loki’s paws before it spreads around the house.
The Final Result: A Hidden Litter Box That Blends with Home Decor
With the transformation complete, I not only had a stylish and functional new cabinet, but my kitchen looked cleaner and more organized. Unless I tell guests that the litter box is inside, they don’t even realize it’s there! Best of all, Loki adjusted immediately and had no issues using his new, private bathroom.

Supplies You’ll Need for Your DIY Cat Litter Box Hideaway
- Cabinet (Make sure it’s large enough to fit your litter box, I found this one for $25 on Facebook Marketplace)
- Antique White semi-gloss paint
- Oil-rubbed bronze cabinet pulls
- Litter box
- Litter mat
- Jigsaw (for cutting the entrance hole and wood frame pieces)
- Wood trim (to frame the cat entrance)
- Construction Adhesive (to reattach drawer fronts and wood corner trim to kitty entrance)
- Hook for scoop storage
Things to Keep in Mind
- Measure your litter box before purchasing a cabinet to ensure a good fit.
- Choose a cabinet with a large enough door opening to easily access and remove the litter box for cleaning.
- Adding a small mat on the inside and a rug outside the entrance will help control litter tracking. For the inside mats I like to use the door mats from Dollar Tree. They catch the litter well and can be easily replaced. I also use the litter mat above to put under the litter box to catch any spills. You May also use it in place of the Dollar Tree mats to catch and recycle tracked litter.
- I want to also mention why I use a covered litter box in this cabinet. I have a male cat that likes to pee on the back wall of the litter box. This sometimes drips over the edge (I know eewww, right?). Even with the cover, which helps, it will sometimes drip between the upper and lower piece of the litter box, so that is why I put the rubber litter mat below the box…just in case, as it is easily washable.
Now, I have extra counter and storage space, and Loki has a discreet, stylish place to do his business. If you’re struggling with where to put a litter box in your home, this DIY project is a game-changer!
