If you have a plain, inexpensive bookshelf that looks basic and uninspired, don’t worry—you can transform it into a stylish statement piece! In this DIY bookshelf makeover, I’ll show you how I upgraded a pressed board bookshelf using paint and a simple design technique. The result? A high-end look for a budget-friendly price!
Materials Needed
- Kilz 2 Primer (for better paint adhesion)
- Beige Paint (for the bookshelf frame)
- Dark Brown Paint (for the shelves)
- Painter’s Tape (for creating the diamond pattern)
- Paintbrushes & Rollers (for smooth application)
Step 1: Prepping the Bookshelf
Before painting, I had to prepare the surface. Most affordable bookshelves are made of pressed wood with a plastic veneer, which makes it tricky for paint to stick. To fix this, I applied Kilz 2 Primer to the entire bookshelf and shelves. This primer ensures that the paint adheres properly and lasts longer. I did not sand it first.
Step 2: Painting the Bookshelf Frame and Shelves
Once the primer dried, I painted the bookshelf frame with a beige paint for a clean and elegant look. For contrast, I used a dark brown paint on the shelves, making them stand out beautifully. Using a combination of a roller and brush helped achieve a smooth, even finish. I first brushed it on then took a foam roller to go over it to smooth it out. I did this in sections to smooth the paint to spread out the thicker spots and smooth the paint. This made the process quick and doesn’t leave brush strokes.
Step 3: Adding a Diamond Pattern for a High-End Look
To give the bookshelf a designer feel, I decided to create a diamond pattern on the sides. Here’s how I did it:
- Used painter’s tape to outline the diamond shapes.
- Painted inside the taped sections with the dark brown paint.
- Carefully removed the tape once the paint was dry.
This simple design detail instantly made the bookshelf look more custom and high-end.
The Final Transformation
What started as a plain, budget-friendly bookshelf turned into an elegant piece that looks much more expensive than it really is! This DIY project was quick, affordable, and completely transformed the look of the space.
